[VIDEO] NYC GAY BAR UPROAR - TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT? - 8.22.11 - PETER THORNE

01:35
(8.22.11) For some is it too close for comfort? A proposed gay bar near a school and a playground in Hell's Kitchen has some community members crying foul. And others wondering -- what's the big deal? Owners of the popular gay sports bar "Boxers" at West 20th Street in Chelsea want to open a new outpost - renovating this dilapidated building on Manhattan's Westside. But the plan is raising hackles for some people in Hell's Kitchen. When I asked "what do you think about that?" one local resident said "jaw, i don't like that at all." Tonight at Boxers West 20th Street spoke I to the bar's lawyer, who said: "there are very specific rules and laws governing how far a "liquor licensed' establishment can be from a school or a church. We have investigated that, we've done some area surveys and based upon what we've seen so far we feel as though we are in compliance with the law." He told me that the bar will conduct extensive community outreach to address any neighborhood concerns. Neither New York City's Department of Education nor Sacred Heart School would comment on the issue tonight. Tonight neighborhood resident Matthew Garrett told me "I don't really see a problem with it...I feel like the time that people are going to frequent a gay bar in Hell's Kitchen is not going to be during school hours." One Hell's Kitchen resident who only shared her first name 'Carrie' told PIX 11 News "I have a son here and i would absolutely not object." Residents pointed out there's a liquor licensed restaurant right across the street and a liquor store as well. The attorney for Boxers Bar told PIX 11 News "we know what the rules are and just as important we want to draw customers from the community. We don't want to disturb our neighbors." He also said the new bar would bring as many as 50 jobs. Community Board four has scheduled a public meeting for September 13th. In a telephone conversation the bar's owner told me they have no intention of violating the 200 foot distance from a school zoning rule.

Watch as we show off a new website we launched for an awesome gay piano bar in NYC! Their old website was a bit antiquated to say the least. Their new one is gorgeous, if we do say so ourselves. And it's built perfectly, both on its face and behind the scenes, so that Google will love it too!

"gay bashed at the gay bar: a townhouse tavern tale"

04:32
minding my business one beautiful night walked up to the patio and i was like im gonna get a drink at the straight bar attached to the gay disco they said hey you get outta here your kinds not welcome look at your outfit your one of them i said excuse me and we almost had a brawl those words i wont forget but the people fuck em all i tried to take a seat i didnt want to fight but i got in his face and showed no fright i wished he had hit me maybe then the people watching woulda gave a shite but no no i was on my own i was who was wrong because i raised my voice and i was the gay one i am the crazy one i am high i am drunk i am crazy i am gay he should be quiet its not that cray well guess what motherfuckers i dont see it this way i get gay bashed at the gay bar with my not friends by myself again heres goes nothing its bout to be a show cuz i dont take that stuff i wont go my grown ass is not gettin bullied my friend and everybody knows everybody saw i kept lookin back they kept scooting back and lookin at the sidewalk starin at some cracks their fancy new tennis shows and the khakis for their butts that look so good girl they can even see a crime against their people in their pretty face honey bee you stupid fuckin idiots go right ahead do your blow in the bathroom at this smelly old bar the owner hates your kind and workers hate your faces but their bathroom is fierce for doing bumps in the stall nice and dark in there for the roaches and frowns and their drinks and strong and you dont dare stand up for your fellow cuz you gotta go there well stay in there and burn in hell you simple faggot now i know for sure of what i was already long aware i get gay bashed at the gay bar with my new non friends oh look at that im on my own again against a fuckin army and theyre breathing straight fire here goes nothing its bout to be a show momma showed me how to squash that shit into the bloody ground and i wont go but they all go away they all gone theyre all silent its me against 20 and im settin the alarm in the fuckin library when the principal is there cuz these books are on fire and everyones busy lookin at eachothers new skimpy underwear this is a song im working on about my experience in dc one night in particular inspired this when i was at the gay bar with some "friends" and went nextdoor to get a drink and was met with extreme aggressive homophobia and thats saying the least. and i was the only one standing up for "my kind" and witnessed the owner of townhouse tavern and his scuzzy minions do the same thing to a few other people as they were outside front patio.. i mean, i will leave it at that.. because i dont know how much i want to say here, as i dont want to alienate anyone and really just want to get it out of my system and send a message and i was not silent after the incident but i feel like i still could have done more. the owner of the gay bar knew all about it and really was quite indifferent and blew me off in my contacting him. as did some other people. live and learn for sure. i think i was just so dissapointed that i felt like i was up against the world in trying to percecute them in some way. but that is the problem, when everyone thinks that... it keeps going.. what if they were outside heckling black people? what would have happened then.. what the fuck. as you can see its a touchy subject for me, as i was bullied my whole child hood and teenage years.. and oh wait , also my adult years.. and when i became fearless of these "bullies" and realized i would be the only one oppressing myself if i so allow it, then i was ready to stand up be strong and fight. even if everyone fades into the background and im there all alone. i apologize for my use of the word faggot. but i was very angry at gay people afterwards.. and i am just expressing my emotions and feelings.. so, dont try to use that against me., but if you do, you have the right to do so. but, its a free country. and, i dont feel bad about it. anyways, im going to work on the ditty and post another video of it soon. love

Inside Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka’s Home That Has a Magic Office | Architectural Digest

04:04
Architectural Digest visits actors Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka at their townhouse in Harlem. A Jonathan Adler light fixture crowns the living room, where Room & Board sofas are grouped with a high-back chair designed by Powell & Bonnell for Dennis Miller Assoc., Arteriors nesting tables, and a bespoke Trace Lehnhoff cocktail table. The parlor floor’s central hall features a vintage Venini light fixture and (atop pedestals) sculptures by Tom LaDuke; works by Ed Templeton are arranged along the staircase. In the music room, walls clad in a Donghia fabric serve as a backdrop for a large Annie Lapin painting, which overlooks a Yamaha player piano and a Bourgeois Bohème Atelier chaise longue. Holly Hunt pendant lights are suspended above the Caesarstone-top island in the kitchen, which is equipped with a Wolf range and hood. Furnished for entertaining, the parlor-floor salon is outfitted with a bar that was salvaged from a Connecticut hotel and acquired from the Demolition Depot/Irreplaceable Artifacts; the chandelier is by Carolina Fontoura Alzaga, and the artworks are by Ed Ruscha, Ahmed Alsoudani, and Francesca Gabbiani. The walls of the den are covered in an Andrew Martin wallpaper and decorated with colorful magic memorabilia; the guitars are by Gibson and Jean Larrivée Guitars, the vintage desk and chair are from Arte de Mexico, and the sofa is by RH. A wall covering by Calico Wallpaper adds intrigue to the master bedroom, where a Jason Miller light fixture from Design Within Reach hangs above the custom-made bed, which is upholstered in a Rose Tarlow Melrose House fabric. Anchored by an RH Baby & Child bunk bed, Gideon’s room is enlivened by a Flash Gordon lithograph and a Keith Haring chair by Vilac; the Roman shade is of a DwellStudio fabric for Robert Allen, and the carpet is by Safavieh. The master bath’s shower fittings and tub are by Kallista, and the tiles on the tub surround, walls, and floor—as well as the python-patterned mirrored tile—are by Ann Sacks. Julius, a bar in NYC's Greenwich Village where Dick Leitsch & Randy Wicker were refused service as self-identified homosexuals on April 21,1966--a pre-Stonewall challenge to liquor laws which ultimately lead to the legalization of gay bars was added to the National Registry of Historic Sites. It was an occasion for celebration.

SoHo and Greenwich Village, New York

11:02
Two of New York's best neighborhoods for walking are Soho and Greenwich Village, and in this segment we're going to take you on a stroll through the area, starting out with several minutes wandering through Soho, which is the neighborhood south of Houston Street. It had been a rundown industrial neighborhood with factories, warehouses and truck-loading ramps, but in the last 40 years, it became New York's supreme cutting-edge, artistic neighborhood. Soho got more and more popular as lots of artist moved in, attracted originally by cheap rents in illegal lofts. From the late 1960s, art galleries came in, and then restaurants and trendy shops followed. Prices skyrocketed to a point where only the wealthiest dot-comers can live there now. The artists have been squeezed out and relocated to Brooklyn, Jersey, the East Village and Lower East Side, but with a similar sequence of changes now happening there too in that never-ending process of gentrification. Big money has taken over most parts of the city. We walk north to the Village along Broadway, cross Houston Street. It just takes a few minutes passing more interesting blocks of the city with coffee shops and little markets, which soon brings us to the NYU student section. We'll go through Washington Square Park, down McDougall, over to Bleecker Street and into the West Village where we will spend most of our program, especially walking along Bleecker Street. You can walk almost anywhere, any which way you want in the Village and have a great time, but we're going to show you a suggested route that hits a lot of the highlights. http://tourvideos.com/
